How the index works

We read the full menu at 53,289 restaurants from each chain's own ordering system, every week — 13,420,895 prices in the November 5, 2026 collection. For each of 3,192 core menu items (items sold at 100 or more restaurants), we take the item's typical price nationwide and in each state. Each state's figure is the average of those state-vs-nation comparisons, so every item counts once and no single chain dominates. The figures on this page are the state's median basket compared with the national median basket, expressed as a percentage above or below it: a state at +10% pays about 10% more than the national average for the same items, and a state at −5% pays about 5% less. Extreme ratios are capped: a handful of stores report placeholder prices (a $99 sauce cup is a data glitch, not a price), and a glitch should not move a state.

Every state and the District of Columbia are ranked. The smallest sample is Vermont (49 restaurants) and the largest is Texas (5,021), and every state has at least 49 priced restaurants behind its score. KFC joined the collection on November 4, 2026, so in states with few KFC restaurants its items simply carry less of the basket. Each restaurant's price is its most recent one; the index is rebuilt with every weekly collection. The restaurant-by-restaurant view is on the price map.

The state ranking hides as much as it shows: inside one city, the same item can cost half again as much across town. These guides price every chain restaurant by restaurant — the cheapest and priciest locations named, street addresses and all.
