How these figures are computed

We read the price of every item on the menu at each restaurant from the chain's own ordering system, every week. A "typical" price is the median across the restaurants named on the page, and every restaurant counts once: when a menu lists the same item twice under two spellings, the restaurant still contributes one price. The cheapest and priciest restaurants named on this page exclude the handful of listings whose price sits outside 0.4–2.5× the item's national typical price — a $99 sauce cup is a till glitch, not a price, and it should not be able to win "priciest" either. Named extremes also exclude one-day pricing anomalies: a price that appears at dozens of restaurants in a single day's collection and nowhere else in our archive is treated as a collection glitch, not a price, though those restaurants still count toward every typical price. State and city indexes average each menu item's local typical price against its national typical price, so every item counts once and no single chain dominates.
