America's flagship sandwiches, priced

Four chains, four signature sandwiches, one question: what does the famous one cost? Fast Food Index reads the price of each flagship at every store that lists it — 29,433 prices in all — and the answer is closer than the advertising suggests.

$5.25 to $6.79 The Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich is the cheapest flagship in America at a typical $5.25. The priciest is the Crunchwrap Supreme at $6.79. The whole spread between the four most famous sandwiches in fast food is $1.54.

Decades of burger wars, settled by 10 cents

The Big Mac and the Whopper have been aimed at each other for decades. Priced store by store today, the typical Whopper costs $6.19 and the typical Big Mac $6.09 — 10 cents apart, both under the Crunchwrap Supreme's $6.79 and both above the $5.25 Chick-fil-A charges for its chicken sandwich, the only flagship under $5.50.

Where you live moves these numbers more than the chain does — the state ranking shows the same order costing up to a third more in the most expensive state, and the price map shows it store by store.

How this was computed. The typical price is the median of the item's current price at every store that lists it, read from each chain's own ordering system and refreshed weekly. The middle range excludes the extreme 5% at each end. Where a chain lists the same sandwich two ways, the story counts the listing customers actually order — for the Big Mac, the sandwich listing priced at all 12,252 McDonald's stores, not the lower-priced deal add-on that also carries its name.
